about

This song was inspired by a very fun, perhaps too fun, time I spent in New Orleans. I grew up on Long Island, just outside the Hamptons, where there is so much natural beauty but so much of it is inaccessible to most people. Not only are most of the beaches expensive to go to, I think the very fabric of suburban lifestyle is inherently alienating. Getting out of that and spending time in New Orleans, I had a lot of realizations while having a lot of 4am nights, feeling like I'd found people I really wanted to be around and a place I really wanted to be. "Private Oceans" is about trusting yourself and leaving behind something pristine and intimate for something messy but authentic and shared. It's also about being a flirt, because I think flirting is good for the soul, and making up for losing two years of your twenties to a global pandemic. Plus a nod to Townes Van Zandt for good measure.

lyrics

I'm out collecting bruises tonight
I'm making up for all of the nights I should've but I couldn't find the time
Oh I would've tried
But now my friends all go to bed on time

Don't worry what I might get up to
Don't think about whatever it is you think I probably shouldn't do
I'm a fool up to no good cause I just met some fools who stay up too

Trading in all the private oceans for the shared muddy shores
Giving up all my inhibitions, getting what I think I might deserve

I daydream like I'm still 17
(Oh I feel 17)
I bat my eyes and tell you how all I've ever wanted was to seem carefree
and be a tease
And maybe I could make you fall for me

Is it still a daydream if it only comes at night?
It only comes at night

Trading in all the private oceans for the shared muddy shores
Giving up all my inhibitions, getting what I deserve
Going under the spell of chaos for the sake of the song
Giving in to the first impressions cause I've never been wrong

(Hey! Give me a reason to daydream)
I've never been wrong

I'm out collecting bruises tonight
Daydreams only seem to come at night

about

The Belle Curves New York, New York

The Belle Curves is the primary creative vehicle for Troy-based songwriter Delaney Hafener. A typical multi-hyphenate musician, she has an atypical relationship to fame - she doesn't want it. She doesn't need it, and she's not pursuing it. Delaney seeks authenticity, joy, and community through music-making. She mines the world for experiences to sing about like a photographer takes to the road. ... more
